Description
Purple Sprouting Broccoli is an heirloom variety valued in Italy, England and the United States for its deep-purple sprouts. It was introduced to the U.S. in the second half of the 19th century and remains a favorite for gardens and kitchens.
Eat the sprouts raw in salads or crudités, or cook them like regular broccoli; the purple color turns green when heated. Harvest the central head first, then gather the plentiful side shoots. In long-season areas, it can be started indoors for early spring planting or planted in late fall to overwinter for a spring harvest.
