Turmeric is a flowering ginger relative grown for its bulbous roots. Fresh grated or minced root gives lighter, brighter flavor than dried, with earthy, peppery notes and vivid yellow-orange color for curries, marinades, rice dishes and smoothies.
Plants branch heavily with lance-shaped leaves and large green and white three-petaled flowers, good in the garden or as cut flowers. Thrives in hot, humid climates in full sun or light shade; in cooler summers give full sun.
