Description
Blacktail Mountain watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) was developed in northern Idaho to ripen where seasons run cool. Vines reach about 10 feet and bear 10-12 inch fruit with solid deep green rind and sweet red flesh.
Sow 1/2 inch deep. Sprouts emerge in 4-10 days at 70-85ºF soil. Space 36-48 inches apart in fertile soil, mulch well at the start and water steadily. One packet plants an 18-20 foot single row or 5-6 hills.
