Description
Carantan is an heirloom French leek dating to 1874, known as “Monstrous Carantan” in a 1930 D. M. Ferry catalogue. With a long growing season, it can produce white stems up to 3 inches in diameter when grown in fertile, well-drained soil.
Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before the last frost or sow outdoors in early to mid-spring. Plant seedlings 4–6 inches apart, water regularly, and mound soil around the stems as they mature to blanch them.
