Description
Red Romaine Lettuce (Lactuca sativa) forms long, wide leaves with a crunchy texture and rich merlot coloring. It can be harvested young for baby greens or allowed to reach about 12 inches for full heads, making it useful for fresh salads.
Sow ¼ inch deep in fertile soil and keep the seedbed evenly moist. Direct sow in spring once soil reaches 50°F, thinning from 1 inch apart to 6–12 inches according to the desired head size. Sow every 2–3 weeks for a longer harvest, and provide compost or well-rotted manure for strong growth.
