Description
The variety is Woad (Isatis tinctoria), a biennial for zones 4-8 grown for dyeing, medicinal and ornamental use. Plants reach about three feet and bloom with small yellow flowers in the second year, followed by deep purple pods.
Sow 2-3 inches apart and thin to 12 inches apart. Lightly cover seed. Germination takes 7-14 days; soaking overnight aids sprouting. Start indoors 4-6 weeks before last frost at 65-70°F and transplant 12 inches apart, or sow outdoors 1-2 weeks before last frost or in fall. Grow in full sun in fertile, well-drained but moist soil. Packet holds 25 seeds with naturally low, irregular germination.
