Description
Nantes is an 1850s French heirloom carrot with reddish, blunt-ended roots about 1 1/2 inches by 6 inches and a crisp, sweet flavor. Sow 1/4 inch deep outdoors starting 3 weeks before the last frost into mid-summer, thin to 1-3 inches apart for a 10-12 foot row from this 300-seed packet. Sprout comes in 6-14 days in 60-85ºF soil, slower in cool soil up to 3 weeks.
Keep the seedbed evenly moist until germination and cover exposed shoulders to prevent greening. Pick from finger size for baby carrots; late carrots sweeten in cool weather.
