Description
San Marzano is an Italian heirloom paste tomato with mild, pleasant flavor for cooking down into sauces and purees. The packet holds 25 seeds (Solanum lycopersicum), maturing in about 82 days. Vines are vigorous and indeterminate, carrying clusters of lobed, elongated 1-1/2 by 3-1/2 inch fruit with firm flesh and very few seeds.
Sow 1/4 inch deep. Sprouts in 7-14 days at 70-85ºF soil. Start indoors 6 weeks before last frost at 75-80°F, then transplant after last frost 24-36 inches apart, setting plants deeper than they grew. Harvest when red and firm. Give fertile soil with compost and even moisture.
